Our Instructors
David Duncan
David first discovered clay at Greenwich Pottery in the West Village, taking classes with accomplished Brooklyn ceramic artist Peter Lane. A retired neurologist, he founded AP CLAY to share the joy, creativity, and community he found in ceramics.
Lilli Lowenhar
Currently studying to get a BFA in Studio Arts with a concentration in Ceramics, Lilli rekindled her love for pottery her freshman year of university. She has previously taught at several studios and has joined the AP Clay team to teach and spread her pottery love and knowledge. Her artwork is focused on blending utilitarian pieces with artistry; recognizing the lack of craftsmanship within most objects in our daily lives.
Sara Pavao
With over thirty years of experience working in clay, Sara first discovered ceramics at Syracuse University, where an early passion for wheel throwing laid the foundation for a lifelong creative journey. After college, her journey in clay brought her to classes at The Clay Studio in Philadelphia, Penland School of Craft, Peters Valley School of Craft and the University of the Arts. Over time, her practice evolved toward handbuilding, a shift that opened space for greater exploration, intuition, and quiet reflection. Today, she approaches the forming of clay as a meditative dialogue—each pinch, coil, and surface becoming an invitation to slow down, listen, and connect. As a high school ceramics teacher, Sara shares this reflective, hands-on approach with young artists, encouraging them to slow down, explore, and cultivate their own relationship with clay. Through both personal practice and teaching, she continues to find meaning in the quiet, transformative dialogue between maker and material.
